In the ‘60s, Hawker Siddeley developed the Hawker Siddeley Harrier for the Royal Air Force. During the Second World War, the undisputed quintessential plane of the Japanese had been the Mitsubishi A6M Reisen. Also known as the Zero fighter, Mitsubishi designed it. However, Nakajima co-produced the aircraft. Together, the companies produced over 10,000 units of it from 1939 to 1945. The Japanese Navy staff asked the companies to make proposals for a new aircraft that could take the place of the Mitsubishi A5M carrier fighter. This plane was legendary in terms of air kills. We are sad to admit that we do not know the current asking price for a unit.

Short Tucano Trainer

Here, we have a two-seat turboprop basic trainer aircraft. The Short Tucano Trainer was built in Northern Island by Short Brothers. Its main operator had been the Royal Air Force, although it exports the plane to Kuwait and Kenya every now and then. The prototype was first flown in 1986. Two years after that, the Royal Air Force received its first units. This plane is mainly operated at RAF Linton-on-Ouse, where it offers basic training to student pilots of the RN and RAF. Students fly around 130 hours with it before they transition to the Hawk T2 aircraft trainer. You can bring one home with you for approximately $1.3 million.

The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle is a twin-engine, tactical fighter aircraft initially designed by McDonnell Douglas, which is now a part of Boeing. It was designed back in 1969 and flew for the first time in 1972. In actual aerial combat, the aircraft has been victorious 100 times without a single loss. It has mostly been used by the Israeli Airforce in conflict, but has also been exported to Japan and Saudi Arabia. The aircraft is still being developed today, although in many different variants. The aircraft has been used in action by the U.S. also, for example in the Gulf War. The F-15 was responsible for 36 of 39 air-to-air victories against Iraqi forces during this war, something mightily impressive. The F-15EX, a later version of the aircraft costs around $87,7 Million per aircraft.

The Tomcat was a special military aircraft. This aircraft was a carrier-capable supersonic, twin-engine, two-seater, twin-tail wing fighter jet. It was developed for the U.S. It made its first flight on 21 December 1970 and was formally deployed in 1974. The F-14 Tomcat was the U.S. Navy’s primary maritime air superiority fighter jet well into the 2000s. Later versions were even well suited to ground-attack missions, after a Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system was added. It was retired in 2006, with the emergence and preference of the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. They are still used by Iranian forces however, since many were exported to Iran during the Pahlavi regime, 1976. This aircraft isn’t cheap and costs up to $38 Million.

The successor to the Grumman F-14, the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a twin-engine, carrier-capable, multirole fighter aircraft variant based off of the McDonnell Douglas F/A018 Hornet. Having an internal 20mm M61 rotary cannon, it can carry air-to-air missiles as well as air-to-surface weapons. The aircraft has 5 external fuel tanks and can be reconfigured as an airborne tanker. The super hornet made its first flight in 1995 and is still used to present day. As of April 2020, 608+ Super Hornets had been built. It has been exported to both Kuwait and Australia, and is still used by their military services. This aircraft can cost up to $66.9 Million.

The Convair F-106 Delta Dart was the main all-weather interceptor aircraft of the U.S. Air Force from its inception in 1956 up until its retirement in 1988. The jet was known for its incredible speed, and in 1950 Major Joseph W. Rogers set a world recrod speed of 1,525.96 mph while flying the aircraft. It was used by both the U.S. Air Force and the Air National Guard throughout its time in active use. Even though they were gradually retired from the beginning of the 80s, they were converted into drones for training use in the late 80s. A first-generation jet powered all-weather interceptor for the U.S. Air Force, the twin-seat craft was developed from the Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star trainer in the 40s. It replaced the North American F-82 Twin Mustang in the all-weather interceptor role. It was the first actually used aircraft by the U.S. Air Force to be equipped with an afterburner, and first jet-powered all-weather fighter to enter combat during the Korean War. It was operational for a very short time, having been replaced by the Northrop F-89 Scorpion and North American F-86D Sabre in the 50s. The last remaining aircraft in active-service was flown in 1959 by the Air National Guard. These jets are actually quite affordable, costing between $123,000 and $196,000.

North American F-100 Super Sabre

An American supersonic jet fighter aircraft, it served in the USAF between 1954 and 1971, continuing further with the Air National Guard until 1979, when it was formally retired. This jet was special, as it was the first USAF aircraft that was capable of supersonic speed while in level flight. It was intended on being a high-performance upgrade on the F-86 Sabre. Eventually, the aircraft was adapted as a fighter-bombed and was superseded by the ultra-quick F-105 Thunderchief for several missions over North Vietnam. A supersonic jet that served in both the U.S. Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Voodoo was initially designed to be a long-range bomber escort, but was instead developed as a nuclear-armed fighter bomber and as a photo reconnaissance aircraft based on the same airframe. An F-101A version of the aircraft set numerous speed records for jet-powered aircraft, which includes fastest airspeed. It was retired by the USAF in 1972, and the Canadian Air Force in 1984. An American Interceptor aircraft, it was constructed as a part of the backbone of the USAF’s air defense in the 50s. It was first used in 1956 and was set for intercepting Soviet strategic bomber fleets during the Cold War. The F-102 was the U.S. Air Force’s first operational supersonic interceptor and delta-wing fighter. It was eventually retired in 1979 after several years being used by the National Guard. In later years, many aircrafts were converted to target drones, while some were exported overseas to Turkey and Greece. This aircraft can cost up to $1,184,000.

North American F-86 Sabre

The Sabrejet (nickname) is a transonic fighter aircraft best known for being the U.S.’s first swept-wing fighter that was capable of countering the swept-wing Soviet MiG-15 in high-speed dogfights in the sky during the Korean War. The F-86 is highly regarded in comparison to fighters of other eras. Despite the fact it was developed in the late 40’s, it became outdated by the end of the 50’s. It proved versatile and adaptable and continued to be a front-line fighter for many air forces, such as the Japanese, Francoist Spanish Air Force and the Republic of Korea Air Force. Having been developed from the North American FJ-1 Fury, it had two variants, the Canadair Sabre and the North American Fj-2/-3 Fury. This aircraft is one of the more affordable ones on the list, costing up to $178,000.

The Canadair Sabre is a jet fighter aircraft built by Canadair under license from the North American Aviation. It is a variant of the F-86 Sabre and flew for the first time in 1950. Used primarily by the Royal Canadian Air Force, it was also used by the U.S. Air Force, the British RAF and the German Air Force. It was replaced by the RCAF in 1962 with the Canadair CF-104. The Thunderchief flew for the very first time in 1955, before being fully introduced in 1958. It was retired in 1984 and was primarily used by the USAF. The Thunderchief was a supersonic fighter-bombed capable of Mach 2 and was used for many strike bombing missions during the earlier years of the Vietnam War. It was the only American Aircraft removed from combat due to high loss rates. Despite the fact that it was initially designed as a single-seat, nuclear-attack aircraft, it was later developed into a two-seat Wild Weasel version for specialized Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) against surface-to-air missile sites. It was commonly referred to as ‘Thud’ by its crews. When it entered service, it was the largest single-seat, single-engine combat aircraft in history and weighed 50000 pounds.

This aircraft is a modified version of the Lockheed F-104 and was built in Canada by Canadair under license. Primarily used as a ground attack aircraft, it was initially designed to be used as an interceptor. It was first flown in 1961 and was fully introduced in 1962. It was exported to other Air Forces, including the Royal Danish Air Force, Royal Norwegian Air Force and the Turkish Air Force. It was finally retired and last used in 1995 by the Turkish Air Forces. In Canadair, it was replaced by the McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet. Canadair produced 200 of these aircrafts, while an additional 140 F-104Gs were produced for Lockheed.

The Northrop F-89 Scorpion was an American, all-weather, twin-engine aircraft which first flew in 1948, before being formally introduced to regular military use in 1950. The Scorpion was the first jet-powered aircraft designed to be used for this specific role. Even though it had some limitations by having straight wings, it was among the first USAF aircrafts to be equipped with guided missiles. It was ultimately retired in 1969, and many variants of the Scorpion were produced, 1050 in total. The Scorpion can cost up to $1,009,000.

The Republic F-84 Thunderjet was a turbojet fighter-bomber aircraft which originated as a 1944 United States Army Air Forces proposal for a day fighter plane. Having first flown in 1946, it fully entered military service in 1947. Variants of this aircraft became the USAF’s primary strike aircraft during the Korean War. Primarily used by the U.S., it was retired by the USAF in 1964 and later on in Yugoslavia in 1974. The Thunderjet can be bought in a package deal with the Grumman F9F Panther for $239,000. The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark is a retired supersonic, medium-range, multirole combat aircraft. It flew for the first time in 1964 and was formally brought into use for the U.S. Military in 1967. It was primarily used by the United States Air Force as well as the Royal Australian Airforce. The Aardvark had many variants, the most recent of which (RAAFL F-111C) retired in 2010.

Bell P-59 Airacomet

A single-seat, twin jet-engine aircraft, it was designed and built during WWII. First being produced in the U.S., the British donated an engine for the U.S. to copy since they were more advanced in engine development at that time. This engine became the basis for the General Electric jet used by the P-59 only a year later. However, the U.S. cancelled half of their original order (100) on account of the plane being underpowered. None of these planes actually entered combat, but this was the beginning of using turbojet-powered aircrafts. Even though this plane wasn’t the most successful, it is remembered for laying the foundations for future great planes.

The C-12 Huron is the military designation for a series of twin-engine turboprop aircraft. Variants of this particular plane are used by the USAF, Army, Navy and Marine Corps. The aircrafts are used for many roles, including embassy support, medical emergencies and transport. Some of these aircrafts were even modified with surveillance systems for military missions. It was introduced originally in 1974 and was retired in 2017. Certain variants however are still used and produced today, including the Beechcraft RC-12 Guardrail.

The Puma is a tiny, battery powered, hand-launched unmanned aircraft. It’s primary objectives revolve around surveillance and intelligence gathering. The plane uses an electro-optical, infrared camera and was previously selected for the United States Special Operations Command in 2008. It first flew in 2007 and was formally introduced in 2008. To this day over 1000 have been built. The plane can withstand harsh weather and significant wind speed.

The DHC-6 Twin Otter is a Canadian short takeoff and landing aircraft which was produced from 1965-88. Having been used for commercial skydiving operations, it is also used by the United States Army Parachute Team and the United States Air Force’s 98th Flying Training Squadron. From 2008, a variant of this aircraft was created, the series 400, which is still used today. You can pick up a Twin Otter for around $6.5 Million.

With military vehicles, there is almost an expectation for them to be among the most advanced. ‘Adaptiv’, is a camouflage technology developed by BAE systems. This tech allows military vehicles to move undetected by infrared night vision. It accomplishes this by heating and cooling its hexagonal Peltier plates quickly to form the image that it wants. This is similar to a natural background, or simply a non-target object. It was in 2011 that BAE systems announced this tech, comparing it to something like a “thermal TV screen”. This vehicle needs one thousand hexagonal panels to cover it’s sides.

For sure, we would be terrified if we came across one of these robots in the wild! The WildCat was created by Boston Robotics and has the ability to run fast on any terrain. Not only is it amazing, but it is even more impressive because of its capability to carry intelligence and cargo. Imagine being out and about and one of these starts sprinting towards you! Scary stuff.

Arquus Scarabee Armored Vehicle

The beast in the picture below was introduced for the first time at the Paris Air Show in 2019 by Arquus, a company under Volvo. It was at that time that it was announced that the vehicle would be introduced to active duty. The Scarabee combines an electric motor and a diesel engine, allowing it to operate with great stealth. Is it unsurprising that this vehicle is used on reconnaissance missions where long, silent watch is needed.

Owl-Eye Drone

The Russian Owl-Eye Drone is something else. Reportedly, the Russian intelligence agencies have been testing many different radar drones. The end goal is to produce something that isn’t so obviously a machine! The owl drone weighs only five kilograms and can fly distances of up to 12 miles for two thirds of an hour. The Owl-Eye Drone even has a cousin, the falcon drone.

The army is currently testing many aspects of rotorcraft tech, including surviving combat violence. ARL-SLAD aviation analysis team leader Brian G. Smith explained, “The purpose of this program is to generate some limited ballistic data that could reduce risk and/or encourage Future Vertical Lift designers to consider CTEF technology.” This cutting-edge tech can reduce vibration, noise signature, enhance rotor performance and provide more efficiency in helicopter flight control.

Saab’s defense and security division are responsible for producing and developing GlobalEye, which performs several roles. Hand-in-hand with the Erieye ER radar and mission system, the airborne platform has many sensors and is also used by long-range business jet, the Bombardier Global 6000. The GlobalEye has an excellent radar which operates from 30,000 feet in the air. It also has a range of 450km. Not bad, hey?

Guardium Unmanned Ground Military Vehicles

This compact patrol vehicle is capable of hauling 1.2 tons of weapons, sensors or cargo. It is used by the Israeli Defense Forces as a force multiplier. One aspect that it is commended for is for being the best drone on the ground for endurance. It can cruise for 48 hours or move for 24  hours in combat. It is fully autonomous but can also be operated remotely. A small patrol force can control large patches of territory with the use of this unmanned ground vehicle.

The military often use small unmanned aerial vehicles, but not many can  be used on decks with limited space and rough seas. DARPA’s TERN program comes in handy in this situation. TERN, or “Tactically Exploited Reconnaissance Node” aims to introduce an aircraft capable of landing and taking off on it’s tail. Impressive, right?

Ghost Fleet Overlord Program

The main goal of the Naval Sea Systems Command, or NAVSEA, is to construct, purchase and maintain the fleet of ships and combat systems of the U.S. Navy. It wasn’t so long ago that the NAVSEA announced the accomplishment of a particular milestone. One of the Ghost Fleet Overlord’s two test vessels has completed two autonomous transits of 4 days. The transits were 181-hour autonomous operations across 3,200 nautical miles. The Ghost Fleet Overlord program began in the Fall of 2019 and has now moved into phrase two.

It’s official name may actually provide more context- Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel, or ACTUV for short. It would seem that National Defenses are keener on quiet submarines that lurk near the shore. It is silent, autonomous and a mightily impressive anti-submarine ship. Following it’s launch in 2016, it is under the DARPA ACTUV program. It was constructed by Vigor Industrial as a part of a line of experimental ships.

The Gladiator TUGV is a bomb disposal machine that has been modified and specifically developed for use by the Marine Corps. The mechanism has high maneuverability, increased speed and a longer range than any of it’s predecessors. Aside from this, it is armored to withstand small arms fire and is one of the most used combat drones currently being used in service. It also has a multi-mission remote battle station which can use anti-personnel and anti-vehicle weapons. Additionally, it mounts sensors for reconnaissance and supplies for forwarding troops.

How could we possibly leave the B-21 Raider out of this list? The Air Force has long desired a modern long-range Strike Bomber, so Northrup Grumman began developing just that. This aircraft does need to be crewed, but it will be a stealth drone bomber that is capable of flying at the highest of altitudes. Those overseeing its development have explained that a pilot must man the controls as it will likely be used for delivering nuclear payloads.

BigDog Military Robot

Despite now being owned by Google, the BigDog was created by Boston Dynamics for the purpose of building a force multiplier. This robot can cross various types of terrain without falling, which is essentially it’s party trick! Not only is it quick, but it can run across sand, snow, desert and forest quite easily. The BigDog is therefore ideal for delivering supplies and equipment to soldiers in dangerous places, that a human can’t quite reach.

“RoBattle” Unmanned Ground Vehicle

The RoBattle is more than just a utility accessory, it is a well-armed, armored 7-ton drone which is designed for leading combat formations and attacking enemies head-on. The UGV has six independent wheels which can be changed with tracks. Additionally, you can mount heavy weapons, like 25mm Bushmaster canons and TOW missiles on its remote weapons station. The whole system is automated, although the command to fire will come from a human operator. This was done for both moral and ethical reasons, rather than technical ones.
